Welcomed to Rhode Island by Roger Williams, John Clarke established the town of
Newport and the second Baptist church on American soil. Pursued by establishment church leaders in Boston for years, he was arrested along with Obadiah Holmes for holding an
intimate worship service in a private residence in September 1651. This injustice began a
revolution unseen in human history.
